What are cholesterol deposits?
Cholesterol deposits, or xanthomas, are fatty deposits that develop under the skin. They commonly build up around the eyes but can form anywhere on the body. These deposits vary in size, from minuscule to three inches in length. You’ll usually notice cholesterol deposits by their well-defined edges and colours: yellow, pink, slightly reddish and flesh-coloured.
This condition is not typically painful, but it can be very frustrating to live with. Older people and people with high blood lipid levels are more likely to develop these deposits.
Causes of cholesterol deposits
Xanthomas may be caused by high levels of cholesterol in your body, but they may also be caused by:
- Primary biliary cirrhosis
- Metabolic disorders (such as familial hypercholesterolemia)
All of these conditions are associated with elevated blood lipid levels, which can lead to the formation of cholesterol deposits. Xanthomas may be diagnosed visually, but in some cases, a biopsy is needed to confirm the condition.
