What is seborrheic keratosis?
Seborrheic keratosis is a quite common skin growth that can look like a wart, pre-cancerous skin growth (actinic keratosis) or skin cancer – which can obviously cause worry. But even though they may not look particularly appealing, they are harmless and generally cause no pain or discomfort.
Most people who experience seborrheic keratosis develop these growths when they are middle aged or older. Because they begin at a later age (typically they can start to appear as we reach our mid-30s on into our 40s) and can have a wart-like appearance, seborrheic keratoses are often called the “barnacles of aging.”
The characteristics
Seborrheic keratosis spots can be flat or raised on your skin, with a color that is your normal tone or darker (most are tan or brown). Flat Seborrheic keratoses have a velvety or shiny texture. Over time, they may get bigger and become more abundant. They may also become thicker and raised with a waxy or rough texture. You can find these harmless growths anywhere on the skin, except on your palms and the soles of your feet. More often than not, you’ll see them start to appear on your:
- Face
- Neck
- Chest
- Back
- Head
